What is a Google Analytics Goal?

Google Analytics goals are used to measure how often users complete a particular behaviour on your website, such as filling out an enquiry form. When your goals are configured properly, you can learn valuable information about your website and truely measure the success of your marketing activities. In this article, we will be showing you how to correctly setup a Google Analytics goal which can measure how often a form is filled out on your website.

1. Your first step is to find out what the success page of your website form is. Typically this can be something along the lines of “http://www.website.com/thankyou/“.  After you have noted what your form success page is, it’s time to configure this in Google Analytics.

2. Log into Google Analytics and click on your website property. From the left hand sidebar menu, select the “admin”.

3. After you are in the admin section of your web property, you will want to visit the “goals” tab.

4. Once you are in the goals tab, click on the new goals button.

5. You will be presented with a series of inputs, the first being a goal name. Enter something along the lines of “Form Submission” or “Online Enquiry”.

6. Following the goal name, you will be presented with 4 foal type options.

  • Destination: A destination conversion usually triggers once a user visits a specific page.
  • Duration: A duration conversion type is used to measure how long the user engages with a specific page on your website.
  • Pages/Screens per session: A pages or screens per session conversion is used to measure fire a goal once a specific number of page views is achieved in one session.
  • Event: An event conversion type is a type of interaction with your website. For example, you can fire this type of goal if a user clicks a specific button within your website.

For this demonstration, you will need to select the “destination” option.

7. In the next step, you will need to select the “Equal to” and then proceed by entering your success page defined earlier in the text. In this example you will need to enter /thankyou/ in the text box.

8.  For this example, you can disregard the value and the funnel options and proceed to save the goal.

Congrats, your all done and ready to track your first goal. We hope you enjoyed this guide.
